# Gitby

> Gitby is a real-time coordination layer around Git. You claim a file before you edit it, and your whole team sees who holds it. A teammate who needs it asks, and the holder hands it over, so avoidable merge conflicts never start.

Gitby works with Git, not instead of it: commits, branches, pushes, history and merges stay in Git, and your code stays on GitHub. Gitby keeps coordination metadata such as paths, claims, requests, notes and chat, never your source code.

- **For developers:** a terminal app for daily work, and a VS Code extension.
- **For team owners:** a website for the team, its members, repositories and billing, and who holds what right now.
- **For AI agents:** [Set up Gitby](/get-started.md), a guide to follow step by step.

## Install

macOS and Linux:

```sh
curl -fsSL https://github.com/GITBY-SOFTWARE/downloads/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
```

Windows, in PowerShell:

```powershell
irm https://github.com/GITBY-SOFTWARE/downloads/releases/latest/download/install.ps1 | iex
```

Then run `gitby` to sign in and choose a repository.

## How it works

1. A team owner connects GitHub and adds the repositories the team may use.
2. A teammate opens one of them in the Gitby terminal app or VS Code.
3. They claim a file or folder before editing it.
4. The whole team sees who holds which path, live.
5. A teammate who needs a held path asks for it, as a handoff or a takeover.
6. The holder releases it or hands it over. Until then the claim stays, even while its holder is offline.

## What is in it

- Claims, releases, handoffs and takeovers, for single files and whole folders.
- Claims per branch: the same path held on two branches is information, not a conflict.
- Notes on files, team chat and presence.
- Teammates use the team's repositories without connecting GitHub themselves, and Gitby never hands anyone the connector's credentials.
- AI coding agents, in validation: `gitby mcp` lets an agent claim, release and ask for files the way a person does, under its person's account, and the person approves each claim.

Gitby works with GitHub only.

## What it is not

- Not a code host, and not a replacement for Git or for GitHub's permissions.
- Not a guarantee against every conflict. It prevents the avoidable ones inside the Gitby workflow; edits that skip Gitby, or branches merged later, can still conflict.
